CLINICAL THERAPY
Our licensed therapy is practiced by a clinical psychologist, whom is a doctoral level professional with specialized training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional, behavioral and mental health issues. Psychologists are well versed in ethics and laws related to the practice of psychology, and they must maintain their knowledge through continuing education. Psychologists have either a Ph.D. (research focus) or a Psy.D. (clinical focus). Clinical psychologists differ from psychiatrists (M.D.’s) who have a general medical degree and specialized training in prescribing psychotropic medications. Although psychologists do not prescribe medications, they do receive extensive training in psychopharmacology and are often very knowledgeable about psychotropic medications.
Psychologists are uniquely trained in various assessment techniques including both objective and subjective measures of cognition, personality, and psychopathology. Clinical psychologists gain specific training in theories of psychotherapy and generally have training in serving different populations, including different ages and various ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Many psychologists choose to specialize in working with individuals, families or couples. There are many different theories guiding psychologists in their practice of psychotherapy, including behavioral, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, psychodynamic, and systems approaches to name just a few. If you are considering seeking the services of a clinical psychologist, feel free to ask him or her about their practice style. A good fit between psychologist and client allows for trust, learning, and ultimately for growth and healing.
